Weekend with Dad

haveuheard father weekend uga

The Weekend, officially, unofficial for Father.

Dad’s weekend isn’t exactly official at UGA, meaning that there isn’t one specific weekend that it is called for, but many sororities and fraternities have one. My sorority has one during the Spring semester where we invite our dads to a basketball game, a brunch, or a Downtown event like a silent disco. Since most sororities and fraternities also do a Parent’s Weekend for both parents and a Mother-Daughter/Mother-Son day as well, this Father-Son/Father-Daughter day usually excludes moms.

Regardless of if you have a weekend for it or not, inviting your dad up for a day will usually leave long-lasting memories that you will be so thankful you have. For those dads looking to relive their college experience, it is totally acceptable for you to go out with your student. Most dads enjoy the college scene bars but there is outside seating at more “adult bars” where they can get a glimpse into the college lives of their students. My parents love it – as long as we stay outside as it gets pretty stuffy and crowded inside.

For those students who are 21, I highly recommend just taking Dad to the Downtown bars that are you and your friends’ favorites! As it turns out, a lot of my sorority sister’s dads were actually my dad’s fraternity brothers, so they all love to come up and go out together on Father-Daughter Weekend.

During the day, Athens has tons of great activities that your dad will love. Big Dawgs on the River is one of the most popular activities because you can kayak and canoe down the Middle Oconee River. They have group pricing available where you all kayak or canoe down the river together, so it would be so fun for you and your friends and all of your dads to plan to go on this adventure at the same time! There are also tons of different nature and outdoorsy activities to do with your dad in Athens – check out our suggestions in Nature vs Nurture.

Another one of our favorite activities is Axe Throwing at Lumberjaxe on North Lumpkin Street. This place has such a fun atmosphere as well as tons of different beers on tap that your dad is guaranteed to enjoy.

My parents and I love to eat at all of the amazing restaurants in Athens, so when my dad comes up, we always try to eat somewhere new and different. Whether it is breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner we are always guaranteed a good meal in Athens, and it’s nice to have dad pay for it!

If you are over 21 and your dad is a beer fan, make sure to take him to one of the 5 different breweries Athens has to offer. They offer different tastings and tours that will for sure entertain him and give you the opportunity to try some of the best beers made right in Athens. The five main breweries in Athens are:

No matter what, inviting your dad up for the weekend is always a good idea. You will both have so much fun making memories together that will last a lifetime, and your dad will love getting to be a part of your college experience on a whole new level by meeting your friends, seeing where you go out and have fun, and walking around campus!
