UGA’s Freshman College Summer Experience

UGA offers a “Freshman College Summer Experience”, also known as FreshCo, which is a four-week session in the summer where incoming Freshmen get to move into the dorms, take classes, and meet people. This is only available to UGA freshmen who have been accepted for the Fall semester; Spring semester admits are not permitted to participate. Students enrolled are required to take two classes, one being service-based and one being academic-based, and take these classes alongside one another, while learning to navigate UGA’s campus and life as a student.

The FreshCo experience requires a $300 non-refundable commitment deposit upon acceptance into the program. Overall costs are about $4,000 for in-state students and about $8,000 for out of state students; this is extra and does not cover any costs for the Fall or Spring semester. HOPE and Zell Miller will cover tuition costs to make the in-state cost less expensive.

Classes typically run the entire month of July and summer is a quiet time and really gives students an opportunity to get acclimated and adjusted to college life. Students usually end on the last day of July and are required to go home so the dorms can be cleaned. They typically return on the first day of Fall to move in.

FreshCo Participants

While FreshCo looks a little bit different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FreshCo participants will still get priority housing to Russell Hall and will live in general proximity to each other (same floors and hallways) for the 2020-2021 school year. Students participating in the FreshCo experience will live in the same dorm for the entire year and must room with someone who is a part of FreshCo. That roommate stays your roommate for Fall and Spring semester as well.

Students will also be able to exclusively participate in Beyond Classes during the Fall semester of their freshman year and receive all of the benefits that come with that class. The Service Learning and regular academic classes will be offered online during the summer of 2020. The Service Learning credit not only satisfies hours of elective credits but also counts as the Experiential Learning Graduation Requirement for all UGA students.
