Being Thrifty

Need to Stay on a Budget? Be Thrifty!

Are you thrifty? Being a college student, it can be stressful to be thrifty and stay on budget throughout the semester. There can be interviews, social events, and many occasions for a new outfit. In between, living in a rental, I like to redecorate my room and living space with my roommates. Spending money at the mall, popular house décor stores, Target, or discount stores, such as Homegoods, can add up quickly.

Fortunately, I have discovered the various thrift stores located in Miami. No matter what type of item you are looking for, these stores have it. From clothes, bedroom decoration, or appliances, they have it all. Buying second-hand allows students on any budget to get everything they could possibly need for class, their living space, and professional events.

Thrifting isn’t just a hot trend right now. It’s an amazing way to stay in style while saving money. Thrifting is a fun activity to do with friends and a great way to get new clothes and items without having to spend a ton of extra money. Below are some suggestions of places to check out next time you want to go thrifting.

  • The University of Miami has its own Thrift market called UThrift where students can donate and exchange clothes, books, and more! It is traditionally held every Wednesday from 9:30-2:30 pm at the Farmer’s Market. UThrift also accepts drop-off donations in the student government ECO office at any time throughout the week.
  • Dragonfly Thrift Boutique – this is a little further away from UM by West Flagler. This thrift store is an initiative of the Ladies Empowerment and Action Program (LEAP) where 100% of their proceeds support LEAP’s mission of empowering women to put their incarceration in the past. Take advantage of their Saturday discount of 25% off.
  • Goodwill – Located on Bird Road, most thrift shoppers are usually fairly impressed by what they find at this location.
  • Lotus House Thrift Chic Boutique – Located on 7th Avenue about 20 minutes from UM, they support the Sundari Foundation and Lotus House for women to help them break the cycle of violence and homelessness. Here you will find gently used or new clothing and shoes, furniture, and collectibles.
  • Miami Twice – Located on SW 40th Street near Um, this store has been around since the 1980s carrying vintage clothing, jewelry, shoes, and accessories.
  • The Fashionista Consignment Boutique – This is more upscale shopping located in Coconut Grove. They carry mainly high-end brand women’s clothing at up to 75% off their retail price.
  • This and That Shop– located in Commodore Plaza, they sell previously-owned and new items, including the following clothing, furniture, jewelry and watches, and other accessories,  household items, and collectibles – books, pottery, artwork. Proceeds are given to charitable organizations
  • Twice Vintage Shop – located on Bird Road, this store has some eclectic finds including retro clothing and funky home goods.
