Best Coffee Shops at UM

Coffee, Cup of Joe, a Cuppa, Java

Caffeine is king for most college students and, while generally the most economically savvy way of getting it is making it at home, most students choose to obtain their “bean juice” via more expensive and more social ways. I, for one, am a huge coffee lover and typically have a cup in the morning from my trusty Keurig, as well as a shop cup later in the afternoon. Since coffee shops are peaceful and quiet, they are my top choice of study spots in Miami. They are also common places for dates, meetups, and hangouts due to the ease of conversation that seems to flow while drinking a dark roast or a cappuccino. It seems there’s a shop on every corner in Miami which is great because you’re bound to find at least one that matches your vibe or scene.

Whether you have a hard test, huge essay, or crazy assignment, you are guaranteed to peacefully be able to finish and achieve an A when studying in a shop. Plus, who wouldn’t want to drink a cup of heavenly goodness while tackling a never-ending pile of work? By the way, many serve some amazing teas as well. And….it would be unfair if I didn’t note that since Miami’s spirit is infused with Cuban culture, Cuban coffee is abounding and rather delicious. However, do not get confused when it comes in a tiny cup. It is hot, sweet, and very strong. Seriously, it is a rush of caffeine that will surely keep you awake for hours.

The Best Coffee Shops

  • Allegro Coffee – In Whole Foods, coffee, done the way you like it.
  • Brewing Buddha Café & Arthouse – We hear everything is good, but the Midnight Coconut Latte is extra special.
  • Cafe Curuba – Vintage movie posters make it pretty, but they also prepare their coffee using a cross between a French press and a pour-over; so delicious.
  • Café Demetrio – beautiful custom coffees, usually closes by 3 pm and not open Sundays
  • Café Grumpy – excellent quality coffee
  • Chef Sucre Café – coffee, tea, (and wine and beer too), lovely outside tables too
  • Crema Gourmet Espresso Bar – I love the atmosphere here and the coffee, tea, and snacks are pretty great too.
  • Dr. Smood – South Miami Organic Café – Cafes and coffee, tea, juice bars, and smoothies
  • Eternity Roasters – If you have a car and want to sneak away from campus (about 20 minutes) check out Eternity Roasters. While there, check out any espresso drink or sun-dried naturals
  • Mui’s Tea – Bubble tea as well as hot tea, coffee, tea rooms.
  • Panther Coffee – In Wynwood so the vibe is perfect…and so is the espresso.
  • Pasion del Cielo Coffee – If you are interested in the acidity, aroma, flavor, and body before you sip, this is your place
  • Small Tea – a little bit out of sight so you may have to look for it. The atmosphere is lovely though and the selections of tea, snacks, and desserts are great. Check out the green tea americano.
