Challenging classes can be handled with tutoring.

Students who attend The University of Miami, no different than many other highly sought after colleges, will be faced with challenging classes taught by respected and renowned professors and tutoring can help. This is not high school where a student can often coast by; succeeding at UM requires taking classes seriously.  At the same time, there are many other opportunities to get involved and enjoy these four years including football games, Greek life, and outdoor activities. A student needs to be able to balance all of this which can prove daunting to many. But since they have such a selective admissions process, the understanding is that many of these students have already been faced with balancing academics and social and civic activities.

The Camner Center for Academic Resources at the University of Miami offers a multitude of resources for every constituent of the University of Miami community: students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators. Their goal is to provide resources to help manage success and advance potential.

On-Campus Tutoring Services

The Peer Tutoring Program at the Camner Center for Academic Resources offers the University of Miami students support in achieving their academic goals. The Peer Tutoring Program currently has over 100 peer tutors knowledgeable in various subjects, both undergraduate and graduate, working to help fellow students with reaching their academic goals.  This is a great on-campus resource that can conveniently work with your students’ schedule. Just be sure to schedule tutoring sessions in advance as they do not take same-day walk-ins. Tutoring services are offered by appointment only.

Appointment Policy

  • Students must be currently enrolled at the University of Miami.
  • Same-day appointments are not available.
  • Students MUST arrive at sessions on time. Tutors will only wait 20 minutes from the start of your appointment time.
  • Appointments must be canceled 24 hours BEFORE the scheduled session or it will count as a No-Show.
  • Students may contact the Tutoring Coordinator with extraneous circumstances.
  •  A No-Show will result in immediate cancellation of all future appointments for that subject.

No Show Policy

  • Students will be considered a No-Show if:
  • The student fails to be present at the time and day of the appointment.
  • The student fails to be present within the first 20 minutes of the appointment.
  •  The student fails to cancel a scheduled appointment 24 hours prior to the date and time of the appointment.

The Camner Center for Academic Resources provides the support of a trained learning specialist to undergraduate students. The learning specialist provides guidance to students experiencing difficulty with academic issues related to the transition to college. Students may request a one-on-one meeting with the learning specialist to help develop the skills needed to achieve success in their academic careers. Some of the skills covered during these appointments include time management, effective note-taking, critical textbook reading, organization, test-taking, and learning strategies. Appointments with the learning specialist are subject to availability and based on a first come first serve basis.

Talk About It

If your student mentions they are having difficulty, there are many places to turn including speaking with their professor or teacher assistant. There are also peer academic study groups. For some subjects, students can also access the additional University of Miami tutoring resources for specific classes.

Textbook rental and purchase company Chegg offers Chegg Study for $14.95. Students have found success in working with their specialists. They offer study help in business (finance, economics, accounting, operations management), Engineering (computer science, electrical, mechanical and civil engineering), Math (algebra, calculus, stats and probability, and other math), and science (physics, chemistry, biology). For more personal help, they also have a Chegg Tutor which gives more one-on-one help. The price is $15/week for 30 minutes (50 ¢/per additional minute) and they offer a free trial.

And, students also speak highly of the Knack App, a peer-to-peer tutoring approach that allows students to find peers through the app that have done well in particular courses and schedule on their time. They offer package pricing but it equates to approximately $25/hour. They do offer discounts for higher hour packages including a semester pack and a yearly pack. Once you’ve been tutored, having a quiet spot to study helps too. Check out our Best Spots on Campus to Study.
