HaveUHeard of These Fees?

You can’t get away from the fees! There is no denying that college tuition, in and of itself, is a huge expense; however, on top of the cost, HaveUHeard that UGA has extra fees that may or may not be covered by some scholarships, HOPE/Zell Miller, or prepaid programs?

The total cost of UGA is made up of required tuition and fees, room and board for students choosing to live on campus and buy a meal plan, as well as an estimated amount for books, supplies, self-transportatio88n, and miscellaneous expenses. The amount that will be required to pay by UGA students in Athena will be for tuition, fees, room, and board. The other expenses on the UGA costs webpage are expenses that have been estimated based on the average amount UGA students typically have to pay out of pocket for things like books, supplies, self-transportation, and miscellaneous expenses.

Unlike other universities, UGA did away with extra fees for laboratory and other supplementary course materials beginning in the Spring of 2020 as a way to reduce costs for students. There are a total of 10 different fees that make up the total amount on the costs page. These fees are mandatory and help pay for specific things around campus:

  •  Activity Fee is mandated by the Student Government Association and is dedicated to student programming and operating expenses associated with the clubs, organizations, and groups.
  • Athletic Fee helps keep the price of student tickets to football games as cheap as possible, while also allowing tickets to other sporting events such as basketball, baseball, and gymnastics to be free to students. It also helps maintain and upkeep facilities used for intramurals and club sports teams.
  • Connect UGA Fee helps maintain the academic information system and helps pay for updates to the system when needed.
  • Green Fee helps to fund UGA’s Office of Sustainability and aims to reduce the University’s environmental impact on each of its campuses through programs, incentives, and internships to help grow student knowledge.
  • Health Fee supports operations of the University Health Center.
  • Recreation Fee supports recreational and wellness programming, facilities, and administrative costs provided by the Department of Recreational Sports, including the Ramsey Center.
  • Special Institutional Fee is regulated by the University System of Georgia and helps to preserve the core instructional, research, and outreach missions of the USG institutions
  • Student Center Facility Fee supports utility and operating costs for student service and recreational facilities.
  • Technology Fee aims to support UGA’s mission of enhancing student’s abilities, knowledge, and experience through advanced technology.
  • Transportation Fee helps pay for and support the UGA Transportation & Parking Services for busses, bus stops, and parking lot maintenance around the University.

There are also some other specialized and specific mandatory fees such as the mandatory Health Insurance Fee for all international and specified graduate students, program fees for Study Abroad, and early move-in fees for girls participating in recruitment. While there are a lot of extra fees required by UGA, they are very specific, detailed, and intentional about telling students exactly where their money is going. Also, for extenuating circumstances, such as a pandemic, withdrawal, etc will usually result in a refund of these fees.
