A Springboard to Your Career Future

The UGA Career Center is commonly seen as one of the most important resources available to UGA Students across the board. Located at 825 S Lumpkin St, Athens, GA; it is equipped with tons of employees ready to help with internships, jobs, resume building, grad school, and so much more.

Their website is a great resource available to students 24/7. It has many features, including a Virtual Career Assistant named Bark Bot available for help around the clock. There are many tabs online including Job Search, Interviewing, and Resumes. All three of these options have an abundance of links and information that can answer almost any question you have. There are also sample resumes, online mock interviews, and links to information regarding things like appropriate business casual dress, sample interview questions, and interview etiquette.

HaveUHeard that UGA SGA’s Professional Clothing Closet provides free, professional clothing for students? As a UGA student, you will have access to one free, professional outfit per academic year. Reserve your clothing here!

Another amazing aspect of the career center website is the “Majors” section; this is all about matching up majors and careers and helping students get the experience needed in the classroom to succeed in the workforce. There are also helpful links regarding Grad School, applying, and Gap Year Guidelines. All of this is available via computer, smartphone, or tablet and can help students dive into preparation for life after graduation.

Within the Career Center itself, there are many different resources. Each semester, there are tons of fairs, webinars, and conferences set up by the Career Center that are open to our students. They are typically broken up into different majors and allow students to come and explore a wide range of companies, skill sets, and employees within their aspiring job field. The calendar is what most students use to track which fairs would be beneficial to them and allow them to plan to be at these.

The Career Center also offers mock interviews, resume help, and class advising. There are also options through the Career Center to assist students in presenting a professional profile through business card design, LinkedIn profile building, and assessments to make sure that one is getting the most out of their visit. There are three options for students to schedule meetings with UGA Career Center representatives: Appointments, Drop-In Hours, and Satellite Hours. All have different purposes and are there for different time constraints and levels of help.

A LinkedIn Jobseeker account allows you to view profiles and send InMail messages starting from $29.95 per month. HaveUHeard that LinkedIn has a version specifically designed for students looking for their first jobs? The LinkedIn Students app is free, and lets you research jobs, view companies where alumni from your school work, and connect with more people. You can create an account and get started right away without spending a dime.

Appointments are designed to be pre-scheduled and allow Career Consultants to sit one-on-one and provide in-depth help on different questions brought in by students. Drop-In Hours are meant to be very quick questions that are able to be answered in 5-10 mins.

Lastly, Satellite Hours are specific to your college or major and are offered on specific days and times during the week; these are designed for questions about anything regarding career consulting and allow for the consultant to answer questions specific to your academic journey. Utilizing these available resources is one of the biggest things you can do as a student to ensure success post-college and I would highly recommend meeting with Career Consultants, attending Career Fairs, and using the online resources.
