Here Are Tips & Tricks On What to Wear

It’s very exciting, what to wear for recruitment is at the top of your list. Welcome to the University of Georgia recruitment! This is going to be an exciting time in your life when you get to find the chapter you will be spending your undergraduate years at. When preparing for recruitment, you’ll want to get to school prior to the Fall semester as recruitment begins before the start of classes.

Since Zoom recruitment begins on Sunday, August 16th, Potential New Members (PNM’s -this is you!) are able to move into the dorms earlier than the rest of the freshman class, and this year that is on the 14th and 15th. University Housing will send an official note on your specific move-in time so you are able to plan accordingly.

If you are planning on going through recruitment at UGA, we’re here to help! Your first step in the recruitment process is to check-in for recruitment and attend recruitment orientation. On July 25th, you’ll have access to a Zoom orientation where you learn the basics of recruitment, meet your recruitment counselor (Gamma Chi), and meet your rush group.

During orientation, you will meet your Recruitment Counselor, who is called a Gamma Chi. Here you’ll receive more information on how your week will look and what being a part of Panhellenic will mean to you.

PNM’s check-in with their Recruitment Counselors (Gamma Chi’s) each morning before Recruitment begins and each afternoon after the round has ended. They verify your decisions at the end of each day and make sure you are aware of what you are doing after each round.

The dropping process is somewhat complicated. You drop chapters after each round and chapters drop you after each round. Each morning you will receive your “party list” which is the list of sororities you will be going to for that day and the order in which you will be going to them.

Though you will be introduced to recruitment at the pre-meeting, we want to provide you with a rundown beforehand so you have everything you need for the week and there are no surprises on day one.

Round One

Round one will last two days since there are a total of 19 chapters you will be visiting. Over these two days, you’ll spend twenty minutes at each chapter and get to briefly meet a couple of members. This is your chance to become familiar with the sororities and ask those initial questions. The members will be asking you questions as well to start to get to know you. You may be asked where you’re from, what your major is, what you enjoy doing in your free time, etc. This will be a long day, so make sure you are prepped with our list of essentials as they will certainly come in handy. Typically, Round 1 happens outside the house or in the living/dining areas.

You drop five chapters after Round 1, but you can be dropped by more than 5 chapters, therefore 14 is the maximum you will visit in Round 2 but not the minimum. It is also possible to return to houses you have dropped if they did not drop you.

What to wear: We recommend wearing a casual skirt, romper, or dress paired with flats or platform shoes. You’ll want to make sure you are comfortable as it is a long day. Keep in mind since this is two days, you’ll likely want to prep for two different outfits.

Round Two: Philanthropy Round

Welcome to round two of recruitment! This round will again last two days and is referred to as Philanthropy round. Here you will learn more about the organization that each chapter teams up with to raise money and awareness throughout the course of the year. During this round, you’ll see a video about how the chapter supports their organization and how the members have been impacted by their philanthropy. You will spend 25 minutes at each chapter and will visit up to 14 sororities. If you have fewer houses scheduled for your day, this is completely normal!  Round 2 is in the chapter room or den area because of the video presentation. You drop 6 houses after Round 2, so for Round 3, 8 is the maximum you can visit, but not the minimum.

What to wear:  With this round, you can again wear a casual skirt, romper, or dress paired with flats or platform shoes. Since this is another two-day round, you’ll want an additional two outfits.

Round Three: House Tours

After a two day break due to the start of classes, you’ll begin round three of recruitment. This is an exciting day as you’ll get a tour of each sorority house. Today you will visit up to eight houses, but again it is not uncommon to have less on your schedule. During this round, you’ll get to chat more with the members of each sorority and hear about their experiences as a sister.

This is your opportunity to get to know more about the chapter members and if you see yourself fitting into their home. This round is a bit longer than round 2, as you’ll be at each house for 30 minutes. Round 3 is just where you tour the entire house. After Round 3, you drop 6 sororities, which means you will end up going to a maximum of 2 Pref parties.

What to wear: Panhellenic will give you a shirt that you will pair with bottoms of your choice. Since it tends to be warmer out, we do recommend sticking with a skirt or shorts. You can wear platforms or wedge sandals here, but just make sure you are comfortable.

Round Four: Preference Round

You made it to the last round of recruitment! Round Four is referred to as Preference Round as you will be making a decision of which sorority you want to be with at the end of recruitment. You’ll visit up to two houses on this day and will spend about 50 minutes at each chapter. You’ll speak to chapter members to learn more about their love for the chapter and what led them to their decision to join that chapter. You may find yourself getting emotional in this round as each sorority has a ritual for this round and you will likely hear sentimental stories. Prefs happen back inside the house usually in the dining and living areas again.

What to wear: This is the fanciest Round, so we recommend a semi-formal black dress paired with heels. Compare this to a dress you would wear to a fancy dinner or graduation ceremony.

Bid Day

It’s finally here, the day you’ve been waiting for! This evening, you’ll head back to Tate Grand Hall where you’ll receive a bid to a chapter. Once you receive your bid, you’ll meet up with the rest of your new sisters where you’ll take a bus to the chapter house. From there, you’ll spend the remainder of the evening bonding with your new sorority members and celebrating. Each sorority has a different theme, so get excited for a fun night! We also recommend packing a bookbag, since a lot of the sororities will invite new members to spend the night in the house.

What to wear: White dress and sandals/wedges. You’ll want to be comfortable as you’ll be in this outfit for the entire evening. For this round, think of an outfit you would wear to a nice brunch or daytime wedding.
