You Can Dance If You Want To

One of the most popular fundraising events in colleges across the country is Dance Marathon. Dance marathons are student-run philanthropies benefiting children’s hospitals all over the country. This fundraiser is both rewarding and fun!  You may have even seen posts on Facebook or received emails asking you to check out a college student’s page. A popular tag is #FTK or #ForTheKids.  Children’s hospitals all over the country benefit from college kids getting involved, raising money, and volunteering their time to help children.

The University of Maryland has Terp Thon. It is a student-run organization that supports patients and families fighting pediatric illness and injury in our local community. Terp Thon is a part of the Miracle Network Dance Marathon movement. This is a great way to unite the UMD community for the great cause of supporting Children’s National Hospital, College Park’s local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

The dance marathon itself is 12 hours long and takes place each March. There are several ways to get involved in this great event. Students can join as individual dancers, with Greek and Student Organizations, and Internal Team. Individual Dancers are UMD students that are looking to participate but are not a part of an established UMD club or Greek Organization.

These students will then be placed on a color team with fellow Terps. They can partake in the fun alone or create a team with their friends. Greek and Students Organizations are the biggest part of Terp Thon! There are over 100 established Greek chapters and student organizations that love to help raise money for the kids. Internal Teams are an option for students interested in going the extra mile. Joining Internal Team means you are committing to working year-round to help plan and fundraise for the Dance Marathon in March. Students can get involved in this special team as a planning team member or as an ambassador of their organization. Info about this amazing organization and to sign up.
