HaveUHeard that Microsoft Office 365 technology is free for all enrolled University of Maryland students? And it’s free for up to five devices. TERPware is the go-to site for students to access all free featured software. Software that is offered on TERPware is Office 365, Windows 10, and various Adobe Creative Cloud Apps. That is a huge cost saving for a college student. To access it, use your UMD ID and password to log in. Office 365 is a cloud-based suite of tools from Microsoft. With it, you also have Microsoft OneDrive which provides cloud storage and sharing files. It can also be accessed from your mobile device. You lose access to your Microsoft Exchange Email and these free programs 30 days upon graduation, so this is something to keep in mind when emailing, creating contact lists, and making documents.

While the computer of choice for many students is trending toward MacBook’s, before you head out to get a computer for your student, some of the colleges have specific requirements that differ from general recommendations. The individual college and degree program hardware and software requirements, and you may find that a DellMicrosoft Surface Pro, or HP may better serve your student’s needs. Microsoft Surface has a great price, any HP is great. If you want to make a little more of an investment, the Apple MacBook Air and Apple MacBook Pro are highly recommended. A lot of students also bring tablets or iPads to class which is great for note-taking.

There are various places to print on campus at UMD. UMD libraries provide a variety of copy and print services for students. Copying and printing are 10¢ per page for black-and-white and 50¢ for color. Students can pay for these printer services through their Terrapin Express or with a photocopy card. Parents or students can add funds to a student’s Terrapin Express account. To obtain a photocopy card, students and visitors can purchase them for $1 at Copy Card ATM Machines at all Libraries on campus. Your UMD ID is your official identification as a student. This multi-function card is used for many different things on campus.  Incoming freshmen will get a chance to get their student ID during orientation.

For all their technology goods, they can show their Terp pride by decorating their laptops, cell phones, gaming devices, and even their amazon echo with customized UMD stickers.
