Moving Out Not As Easy As You Think!

It’s Moving Out Time!

For some, the process of moving in is easier than moving out. When your student moves in, they neatly pack their items in a suitcase. Their towels, sheets, comforters, and décor are new, clean and many times still in its original packaging. Moving out? Not the case. Items are shoved in garbage bags; clothing is piled into a suitcase and the suitcase is sat on so that it can be zippered. Towels and sheets haven’t been washed all semester and can practically walk home!  Needless to say, it can be just as stressful as moving in.

When it comes to moving your student out, there are some options that you can choose from. If you are in-state or have the option of just taking your belongings home, that is a great option. While it can be time-consuming packing up everything and taking a drive home in a car or two, this will be the cheapest option. To make this process of moving out as easy as possible, try taking things home throughout the semester that you no longer need, such as heavy winter clothes. Moving out slowly in stages will make your final move smooth, efficient, and fast.

If you are out of state, I would recommend storing items and clothes you will not need over summer. When it comes to storage, students have the option of just getting a storage unit and doing things on their own, or they can hire a company that can pack, move, and stores students’ belongings. Not only is this a great option for those out of state, but for those that have many items that they will want next year or need help moving out.

Below is a list of a few companies in the area that do just that as well as storage units throughout College Park and local moving companies. While their rates vary throughout the year, many facilities offer a number of attractive deals for students

  • College Boxes: Offers storage, shipping of items, and pick-up & delivery.
  • Dorm Room Movers: Offers packing services, packing supplies, in-room pickup & delivery, shipping of items, and storage.
  • Dorm 2 Dorm: Offers packing supplies, in-room pickup & delivery, and storage.
  • MakeSpace – Storage without the struggle! They pick up, haul, and store your stuff.
  • Storage Squad: Offers supplies, pickup & delivery, and storage.
  • Student Storage at The UPS Store: Offers packing supplies, pickup & delivery, storage, and shipping of items.
  • On-Demand Storage: Offers packing supplies, pickup & delivery, and storage.

Other tips to keep in mind during move out are to take pictures after you have completely moved out in order to avoid being charged for damages. You can be charged if you do not have enough pictures documenting how students leave the room because they will charge you for any minor damage or difference in the original room. Another helpful tip is to be mindful of what you are packing. If your student has not used or worn something this year, it is extremely unlikely they will the next year. Donate or sell belongings to make sure you are only taking home or storing things that are necessary.
