Keeping Fit – Keeping Freshman 15 Off

Keeping fit, what’s the secret? So you find yourself at college, having loads of fun and with the ability to eat pretty much whenever you want. So many local restaurants deliver, too!  Suddenly you notice the freshman 15 creeping on. What do you do?  Fortunately, Maryland has the answer to what ails you, no matter what you like to do. The fitness opportunities on campus are endless. I would be remiss if I didn’t start with RecWell. RecWell stands for University Recreation and Wellness and is literally a one-stop-shop for fun and movement. They have thought of so many things you never could have. Check out free play, where you can take a jog around Lake Artemesia when you have time, or play ultimate frisbee on LaPlata Beach.

Not your thing? There are so many clubs and intramural sports it will be hard to choose. Is the water your passion? Maryland has both an indoor Natatorium and an Outdoor Aquatic Center. Use the indoor facility to work on kayak training, lap swimming, and water basketball. Spend time outdoors doing some sand volleyball, lap swimming, or diving. Whatever your water pleasure, you are sure to find it here! Hit some open swims, catch some rays, participate in some water aerobics, or even try log rolling! Challenge yourself to something new.

Would you rather spend time in a gym? Personal trainers are available as well as group fitness. Before you get started, register for a fitness assessment. You’ll find over 100 classes per week during the fall and spring semesters, including cycling, empowered yoga, body pump, and so many more.  If you prefer, you can just work out on your own. Eppley Recreation Center has all you need and more. Beware, however, I remember the first time my daughter told me she headed to the gym at 11 pm because it is always so crowded. Even at that time, it was busy but she could at least get on some of the equipment she wanted. I was shocked it was so crazy, so plan accordingly.

Do you like to get outside to get moving? Check out adventure trips to see the world in a different way. Winter backpacking, wind cave exploration, rock climbing, hiking, or even seeing the famous Washington, DC cherry blossoms by kayak are only a few of the options available to you through this group. Any Terp needs to check out the climbing wall. This 55-foot tall freestanding rock wall is sure to please. No experience necessary! How about golf? It’s never too late to try! The University has a full service, year-round, 18 hole golf course that you are welcome to use.

It can honestly be overwhelming with all the fitness opportunities. I would encourage you to get involved in anything that can keep you fit and keep you connected with others. It is a great experience to stay well and make friends. And don’t forget! If you just want to get outside you can always just take a walk or jog on our beautiful campus!

And, of course, you will want to combine exercise with that healthy eating regimen. Check out our suggestions in our blog Eating Healthy.
