Go Terps! Everything About UMD Sports

Everyone really loves sports. And one aspect of the University of Maryland that can be a deciding factor on where to attend college is their sports. UMD is a member of the Big 10 Conference, meaning sports are HUGE here. Being a huge sports school is fun and playing other Big 10 schools brings about competition and even more fun.

Whether you’re a sports expert or have no idea what is going on, you are bound to get caught up in the enthusiasm and excitement and fall in love with the games. Also, if you see the Maryland flag coming down behind you at a game, you better get in there and go crazy with everyone. There are some important things that you should know, like where to get tickets and where the best place to sit is.

Student Tickets

HaveUHeard…UMD students get in FREE to all Terp athletic events, including football? Football, basketball, lacrosse, and baseball are the most popular, but tickets are available for all other sports including golf, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field. Getting tickets for the game is fairly easy too. For football and basketball, students register online for regular-season home games. Upon registering, students will now receive emails indicating when the request period begins for each game, so make sure you’re looking out for these emails. When requesting your ticket, you can choose to print it out or have it emailed to you. It is important to hang on to your ticket because you will need it for entrance to the game along with your UMD ID. All student tickets for football and basketball are general admission seating which allows students to sit with friends and family within the student sections.

UMD competes as a member of the Big 10 Conference, the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States, for all sports and has 20 participating teams. The University of Maryland has collectively won 31 NCAA team national championships and 26 while a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Terps play at the Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium and the XFINITY Center. The Maryland Stadium official seating capacity is 54,000 and the XFINITY center seats, 17,950 people.

Non-Student Sports Tickets

Students may purchase guest tickets on the UMD ticket website if tickets remain available during the on-demand period. The number of tickets available for purchase will be determined on a game-for-game basis. If tickets are not available through this source, secondary sources students or parents can utilize are Stub Hub, TicketMaster, SeatGeek, or Vivid Seats. When buying tickets, it is best to map out which games are of interest to you in advance to make it easier and cheaper when purchasing them.

If you have family coming from out of town to come to a specific game or parents weekend, it is important to look into tickets, hotels, and reservations as early as possible. Certain weekends are very popular for parents, so it is important to plan ahead for your time in College Park.

Terp Graduates – We Haven’t Forgotten About You

Many of our students graduate and are now lifelong Terp fans, but can’t get back to College Park for the games. Good news: There are many bars dedicated to alumni throughout the country; and not just in Maryland! Check them out in our blog Where to Watch the Terps. If graduates are interested in coming to a game, the most popular game is the Homecoming game. Homecoming week at UMD is a week of fun and great events celebrating Maryland pride. Maryland Alumni come from all over the country to come back to tailgate and attend the game. Be sure to check out the Homecoming week dates each year in order to plan ahead.
