Where Will They Live during their Internship?

Did they get an out-of-state internship? Both of my daughters had internships during the summer between their junior and senior years. And both ended up interning in New York City. Since they did not get their internship until early Spring, some of their housing options were quite limited. And, not being familiar with interning out of state, we grabbed what was available. But what if their internship takes them to another large city? Some of the housing options are very expensive. You can look on Craigslist or in Facebook groups – but be careful because there are some scams. They don’t have to live on a college campus, many of which open their dorms for summer interns. They can rent from another student in an apartment. You can check the Uloop Housing section to find sublets.

Many apartments open up the closer it gets to summer, but for me, waiting that long was unnerving especially since I was already nervous about sending my daughters off to The Big Apple.

Park La Brea – The Park La Brea housing complex in West Hollywood offers fully furnished short and long term apartments for rent. Park La Brea Apartments offers three, six, nine, and twelve-month leases on their property.
Oakwood Toluca Hills by Avalon – The Oakwood Apartments complex offers temporary, furnished and unfurnished apartments ranging in size from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Accessible to the 101 and 134 freeways and down the street from the Hollywood Bowl and Griffith Park. Rental rates depend on the size of the apartment, and the length of time that you will be leasing the apartment.
Oakwood Downtown LA – This modern mid-rise serviced apartment community is located in downtown Los Angeles. Featuring fully furnished studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments.

The New School has four suite-style residence halls located near the Union Square area and in Chelsea, both great neighborhoods. Rooms are air-conditioned, have kitchenettes, internet, and 24-hour security.
The School of Visual Arts – offers 3 residence hall summer rentals, all in good locations too. They too offer the same basic amenities as the other colleges above.
Marymount University located in midtown on the east side, but still has easy access to the west. With apartment-size suites, they are your basic dorms with all the amenities.
New York Institute of Technology in Manhattan

The Webster – an all-girls housing option. Their pricing includes a private bedroom, wifi, 24-hour security, two home-cooked meals a day, on-site laundry facilities, daily and weekly housekeeping services, vending and ATM machines. They are located on 34th Street just blocks from all major subway lines and close to Penn Station and Port Authority.
33 Beekman – Located in the Financial District, this is one of the pricier summer living options but if you have a student with an internship in the financial district, perhaps the proximity is more of a priority (and you will save on subways, taxis, and Ubers).
Students can also look at Educational Housing Services (EHS) – They are a not-for-profit organization that manages several dorm-style students and intern housing facilities in NYC.
