College Majors to Pursue in Tough Times

Perhaps It’s Time to Consider Majors that are Sustainable

I have been writing in the college space for over a decade. The content we often included online addressed future employment opportunities for various majors. Our go-to resource was, and still is, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. We would look at specific occupations to find out which ones were the fastest-growing as well as the job outlook for specific industries.

Of course, some occupations that may not have been projected to be fast-growing certainly changed with the pandemic. Like most projections, it is not perfect but it factors in many useful variables. Perhaps students are more interested in median pay than in employment outlook. And, some students graduate with majors that can be applied to many varying jobs. I’d encourage your student to take a look at this information; I believe we have seen firsthand that we are in a tight job market.

But, choosing or changing a major during these unprecedented times may take on new considerations that students may not have otherwise considered. As with any major event like the pandemic, there is a shift in what type of degree a student may want to consider pursuing. Certainly, the job market will look different in the future. Contemplating what jobs were sustainable throughout the pandemic may also help in the decision-making process.

Check out the majors at your college that would be beneficial to pursue. Perhaps a major in healthcare or medicine, business, education, or engineering. There are many options in these fields that are still considered essential. In addition to choosing a major, students may want to add some skills like mastering Photoshop, Google-drive, Zoom, data analysis, computer programming, proficiency in a second language.
