Support, Empowerment, and Connection for Hispanic-Latino Students
Campus diversity amongst students has grown considerably over the years and colleges vie to maintain an inclusive atmosphere; allowing all students to gain exposure, perceptions, global awareness, and a willingness to collaborate peacefully and freely. Whether serving as a forum for communication, helping students build strong social networks, or simply in pursuit of a welcoming space amongst other Hispanic or Latino students; your school undoubtedly has a place where you will find your connections. Campuses have various organizations for Hispanic and Latino students that are sponsored by professional societies, and others focus on diversity, mentoring, networking, college achievement, and other types of support. Each school undoubtedly has a place where all students can find their connections. Check out the various organizations and clubs at your school.
Many colleges recognize the variety of Spanish speaking heritage that fall under the Hispanic and Latino umbrellas and will have specific clubs and organizations that are more particular to each group. Students may find, for example, clubs specific to Mexican, Puerto Rican, S. American, Cubans, etc. Other groups may encompass all. Perhaps, too, your college has sororities and fraternities that specifically recognize Hispanic students.
You will also find that there are many scholarships available to the Latino and Hispanic communities. Most colleges have individualized grants and scholarships for their own school, but there are also many general scholarships available as well. Students can also look into services offered for internships, mentor programs, and job searches through their school. Fastweb, for instance, also lists internships for Hispanic and Latino students. Your school may have more local opportunities as well.
The significant increase in enrollment of Hispanic and Latino students at colleges led to the federal term now known as Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Aware of this rise in enrollment, colleges strive to be sure all students feel supported. Find out what your college offers the Hispanic and Latino community so you can get involved.
